The Little Secrets of Big City Survival

Making It In the City is a compendium of backdoor tips and hand-picked resources that started out as chicken scratch written on the backs of receipts while riding the subway in New York City. Frustrated by high-priced apartments, TV shows that showcased 20-somethings living in cost prohibitive trendy lofts, artists who hated their day jobs, and a stack of rejection letters that could cover an entire wall, a concept of 'happily surviving' was born.

One receipt turned into ten and soon I had an entire pile of notes filled with my own tips on city survival, including all the apartment management companies I could find that didn't charge a fee, the best paying part-time gigs for writers and actors, deals and steals on clothing and furniture, health insurance for part timers, and even cheap ways to pay for a therapist. If I was frustrated, I knew there had to be others.

The notes eventually became my sources for magazine articles and the articles were eventually turned into Making It in the City, a book of practical tips for people trying to make it on their own. Today, the brand has expanded from the original 'girl's' guide to include information for both men and women, live events, city forums and online resources, all with the goal of helping people pursue their dreams and pay the rent. Big cities are tough to navigate. Hey, small cities can be challenging too. But when you know their secrets, it sure makes life a whole lot easier.

Whether you're moving somewhere new or just reconfiguring your life where you already are, we hope you'll use the Making It in the City resources, articles and forums to your best advantage.

So, you're moving to a ridiculously expensive city you can't afford? No cash, no job and no apartment?

Yeah, that's right you are.
